Passage of the Night

Passage of the Night

I witness the passage of midnight
For my dreary head won’t sleep
My conscience serves to help me,
Keep my thoughts quite deep
I search the dark confines
For something tangible to hold
Oh woe for life! For I really am too old
I centre all my feelings.
I gather each small fetter of remorse
Focus still within; upon my unknown course.
This journey is blind to me
For I still do fail to see
What benefit a sleep would do.
What benefit for me?
So I sit in darkened half-light
I continue to contemplate
Wrong from right
No dawn chorus do I see
I fear, of all fears
That this night may last eternity
