Poem -

Peter

Peter Magrew was just 17 years old
when he was sent to the trenches damp and cold
a child who should be studying and having fun
was shipped off to France with some boots and a gun

Where for 9 long months he lived on his knees
he lost friends to bullets and some to disease
until came along that fatefull call
'We're going over the top to kill them all'

they were real young men, not one man a clone
so imagine the fear when the whistles were blown
as they lept over the top to liberate france
they were mowed down like grass for they stood not a chance

As youngΒ Peter lay on the bullet strewn floor
his final thoughts were of this war
then he asked himself the question why
did I leave my family to come and die?

His 18th birthday just a week away
no cake and presents required that day
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth
cost europe a generation of its youth
