Phantom hunger

Phantom hunger

Though fed and clothed
and far from need
the want still lingers on,
the phantom hunger
strikes with stealth
betrayal is its song.

No longer neighbours
wait at doors
to comfort, borrow converse,
a phantom hunger
corrodes the soul
in silk encased adverse.

So lost is love
to avarice mind
only flesh is appeased,
the phantom hunger
casts wandering eyes
to gratify at ease.

Faith cast aside
no need for soul
freedom is abound,
the phantom hunger's
ephemeral promise
draws the lost around.

Post modern notions
take aim at family
nothing sacred now,
a phantom hunger
induces longing
at cradle's broken bow.

Suppressing truth
to tailor others
those that fit their want,
the phantom hunger
draws out confusion
to futures it will haunt.

Those secret demons
all names unknown
nefariously they smile,
for phantom hunger
awaits in shadows
and will be for a while.
