Poet?

I am a poet. I am.
That is the most concise definition of who I am meant to become.
If not a poet
Then what am I?
A stain on the people that I have maimed.
A single verse can alter their perceptions of me.
A few can alter my perception of myself.
If not a poet
Then why have you made me in the likeness
Of someone who resembles me.
I am not a single verse, meant to take
What has been so graciously given
To me, to use
To cherish as my own.
If not a poet,
Then tell me simply
That I must cease to give words
To what I hold within.
