Poor Rembrandt

The greatest artist in history, had a roller coaster life;
Most of it fame’s fruition, but at his end he suffered strife!
The most important painter of his time, mega fortune and ultra-fame;
His patrons always oohed and aahed, at the mention of his name!
.
He married a wealthy lady, Saskia, of beauty great;
But, after giving him a healthy son, she met a saddened fate!
She died and left him broken-hearted, his Soulmate sailed away;
He had thought she’d ever be there, by his side she’d ever stay!
.
Months later, he got a large commission, from the well-known Banning Coq;
To paint his whole battalion, using his brilliant genius strokes!
But in the foreground, he put his Saskia, and Titus, his one offspring;
When his patron attended its unveiling, such outrage did it bring!
.
Soon he was an outcast, very few commissions offered him;
He married his housekeeper, Hendrickje Stoffels, his future looking dim!
Even though eighty per cent paid for, he lost his mansion house;
For in those days there was no refinancing, fate’s flames he could not douse!
.
His last two years, he lived in a bedroom, painting portraits of himself;
His fame, and all his fortune, squandered there in Delft!
He died in utter poverty, this virtuoso great;
A victim of sad adversity, he was delivered a twist of fate!
.
.
Oh, our dear Rembrandt
Your art thrills the multitudes
But life cheated you
