Primitive Mind in a Modern World

My mind is not meant for the modern world
It is meant for forests and savannah
The practicalities of today’s world
Don’t suit my mental makeup.
 
What is the point of “fight or flight”?
What purpose does it now serve?
Feelings of nervousness; of anger
Interfere with the process of living.
 
The mind finds something to cling to
Drugs can make you feel better,
But they’re costly and addictive.
Costly and addictive.  And unhealthy.
 
Alcoholic drinks get the dopamine flowing
Inducing a feeling of pleasure
And nicotine acts as a stimulant
But what place do they have in today’s world
 
Except to mess with minds and our bodies,
Designed for a different time and place?
Oh why are our minds so
Ill- adapted to reality?  Evolution:  Catch up!
 
Gambling.  Gambling:  Another obsession
A good man can spend the family’s finances
Because, like drug addicts they can’t help themselves.
We’re not designed for modern living.
 
Oh the trappings of the primitive mind.
