Remember them.

Today I am closing my eyes.
I am imaging the fear of the brave,
As they willingly sign up to die,
But go forward with their head's held high.
Mothers and sisters give last hugs goodbye,
Swallow their tears,
He must not see her cry.
She carries on, rolling out the pastry
Even though she is dying inside.
The lads from the village,
The pals and the brothers
Go to fight for their country, for freedom and each other.
Who will come home?
Not the boy Who left.
Which of the families,
Will be the ones bereft?
Today I am listening out for the cries,
For the echo of granades
And gunshots, I try
To imagine, the smell of the Trenches And smoke,
As one after one up and over they go
The horror and glory twisted together like the barbed wire
Of the battlefields fought by men, Aching and tired.
So today I am closing my eyes
Remembering with honour them all
The boys and the girls, the horses Too,
I am here, I am free and it's all thanks to you.

Thank you 😊😥
A wonderful tribute which truly brings a tear to the reader. You captured the innocence in those who had to be brave, the fears and the tragedy. Something we never should forget
Many thanks x
