Running Down

December 10, 1980.
Winter Break from College
On I-75 south to Florida,
Major; Undeclared.
Zenyatta Mondatta
Playing loud.
Very Loud.

Twenty-year-old-soul.
You saw it coming,
you know-it-all.
You knew,
you know,
disaster imminent,
yet you go.

"Imminence Front",
steady as she goes.

You took that path,
Threw the rudder away,
through the years and a day.

"I'm not surprised",
you say to yourself,
yet you know to yourself
you never compromised.

You saw it going nowhere,
so you jumped ahead.
You couldn't stand
to play the game,
knowing what you knew,
seeing what was dead.

So, you took the other road,
Hearing, "I told ya so"
making that phrase at once,
a comfortable abode.

You laughed
when they laughed;
seeing you the clown,
knowing
no road,
one walks
brings them,
anything
truly profound.

You knew back then,
you "know-it-all clown".

You made the best,
of what's still around.
