SAVAGE EDEN

SAVAGE EDEN

“This temperate interstadial period of warmth, so important to human kind's development, raced quickly to the end of its brief interruption of the natural order of things, as the next great glacial era loomed.......”      Kevin Ashman – 'Savage Eden'

SAVAGE EDEN

The world was already old when History began.

When we speak of history, we mean the history of man,

For how can a thing exist unless there are eyes to see

And a brain to question – did evolution make me 'me'?

There is a need in us to know the why and the when

Of that first step out of Africa by those ancient men.

The ebb and flow of ice across our world disturbed

That small womb of life and unfurled new horizons.

Did they step out bravely with a questioning mind

Or was the step hasty, fearful of what lay behind?

Where they passed,  the world changed to reflect

Their occupation and when they settled, the world

Changed them, forging embryonic nations.

Ancient empires great and glorious began here

And History teaches us only too well how cities

Rose and fell.  Forests swept away.   Treasures lost.

Brave bones hidden in dust waiting to titillate our senses

With who and how?   History also teaches that the circle turns.

Is it turning now?   Will we, like salmon with the urge to spawn

Return to that womb, that ancient dawn?  The aftermath survivors,

The halt and lame, returning to the core from whence they came.
