Simple Bliss

Simple Bliss

Ten little toes perched atop my feet

as we sway gently and sing along,

champions of a living room dance-a-thon

no matter how many steps are wrong.

Stooping down low to meet at eye level,

scratching backs and night-time prayers-

tucking in blankets like a burrito shell

as they squirm beneath multiple layers.

Walking hand-in-hand on a nature trail,

ambling at whatever pace we please;

soaking up the cool evening air,

catching lightning bugs in the night-time breeze.

Baking cookies for a 1-day sale:

"Hey girls, it's time to frost!"

mixing up lemonade to offer, as well,

making signs with the flavors and costs.

Nestled so tiny in my arms at first,

now snuggling in a shrinking lap;

navigating this gift of parenthood

with no compass or reliable map.

Somehow catching me by surprise

when my shoes are no longer a fit,

still vying for undivided attention

though for a noticeably shorter bit.

Bottle up the laughter and innocence

and hoLd tight to the toddler's kiss,

for nothIng else can easily compare

to theSe moments of...

Simple bliss.

That warms my heart to think of someone smiling as they read Simple Bliss!  I just wanted to capture some of the memories with our girls since they are growing so fast...  I'm glad it brought back memories for others to enjoy of their own parenthood journey and/or childhood.  In my opinion, the world needs to get back to more simple times... :) Happy writing!*!*!
