Poem -

sinner

The church boy is a tender lover
because he speaks his praise softly,
in breaths and in darkness.
He can't let heaven hear his want,
or watch his hands wander
through the garden of Eden because he knows
he'll never be able to stop himself.
He promises himself
that he falls to his knees
only for angels
and before a pearly throne,
but when you touch him
he sinks all the way
down
     (and God,
you wish he prayed for you
     like that, huh?)

He finds himself eternally devoted
to hearing his name sung
like the gospel,
rather than the faith that built it.
          (Who decided this is
          unholy?)
