SLEEPLESS NIGHTS

When you sleep at night I lay awake,
I lay awake staring at the light fitting allowing my mind to wander like an animal that’s lost its herd,
It wanders to brilliantly painful places in my memories that I’d rather stay locked away,
It stumbles across images of the day we first met,
It catches the flittering wings of our first night together,
It shoves past the scars of all the fights and nasty things we’ve said,
It grabs dramatically at the escaping feeling of love I’ve always felt,
It holds on to the spirit of our shattered relationship and tries so hard to force the pieces back together,
As my mind wanders my heart stands more still than a rooted tree,
It locks away my love for you were no one can reach to steal it,
It covers the numbers to the lock It placed there stopping anyone from opening it up and removing the things it wishes to keep to just us,
Whilst my mind and heart are busy my eyes explore every detail of your person,
The hair I used to run my fingers through always soft and bouncy,
The eyes that used to look at me full of love that captured me with their dancing colour when the light hit,
The soft smooth lips I’d kiss each morning and every night and in the day for no reason other than I wanted to,
Eventually all those parts of me settle for the night as my eyes hesitantly close whilst I fight my sleep wanting more than anything for you to wake up and say those words,
Those words I long for you to say and mean,
Just those 3 words...
