Sniper

Sniper

A bead of sweat runs down my forehead,
Collecting in my eyebrow.
For now I must stay motionless,
Lying prone, on wet ground.
My sight is on the target, and my fight is one of loneliness.
Waiting for the moment, of the enemies convergence.
With a finger on the trigger, as I hide and bide my time,
Well beyond the no man's land, deep behind the enemy lines.
The consequences of my capture,
Certain torture of some kind.
They won't take me alive, however,
Got my pill of cyanide.
Wind is picking up now, so I have to make adjustments,
I cannot make a mistake with my...
One shot from a distance.
Proximity alert, from my detector, right behind me.
Disguised with twigs and greenery,
Feet away, I hear him breathe.
Footsteps coming closer, as I reach down for my knife,
One more step towards me, and you're gonna lose your life.
He moves away and whistles, like he's strolling in the park,
Unaware, my presence, undetected in the dark.
The mission is a visionary plan, by my superiors,
And if I make it back, I can return back home, it's been 5 years.
Successfully completed, I've been told I'll earn a Captaincy,
Retirement from danger, and a life on civvy street.

I enjoyed this John,Β  I especially liked the clever rhymes...I'm a sucker for rhymes.

Tell me..is it written from experience? I actually know a soldier who has killed many people. He talks about it as if it's just another day in the office. Not my cup of tea though.

Thank you Syd! Appreciate you stopping by mate, and grateful of your time.Β
Funnily enough, it kinda depends on what you mean by experience, really! Lol! Reason being, is no, I have never been or known, a real life sniper. But this may amuse you; I was inspired by a poem on here titled "Star Wars". And my poem is basically about my experience on playing "Modern Warfare" on playstation!Β
I had a friend in the army btw, he never killed a person, though he did tell us about blowing up cow's somewhere, as target practice! ☺

Btw mate, I'm not trying to pimp one of my poems here (genuinely, as, compared to the included video, my words pale into insignificance, in my opinion! So whether you read it, like it, don't like it, isn't the point to me. I just recommend the video in all honesty, and would like to see it go viral, for everyone around the world to see ! Lol! Needless to say, I was, and still am, a big fan! ☺

My mistake btw Syd. The poem that inspired me isn't titled "Star Wars" , it's titled "The battle" , by Charlotte Mae ☺

Great use of imagination and life experience. My father's WW II memoirs have this,

"Sometime during the day a Japanese soldier came and sat down about ten yards from where I was buried.Β  He took a drink of water from his canteen and lit a cigarette.
I desperately wanted the water and the cigarette even though I had stopped smoking months earlier.
I thought about shooting him but I knew that would be the end of me.Β  I thought about running and cutting his throat with my knife.Β  I wanted the water and the cigarette desperately.
I decided, gratefully, to do nothing. That probably saved my life."

So it sounds like you are spot on.
I enjoyed you write very much.

OMG John! Β Thank you for sharing that portion of your father's memoirs with me, I am honoured. My word! I can only imagine, but to truly experience such fear, courage, and strength... makes me realise how lucky I am, and just how amazing, and thankful we should be to our peers and elders, who in some way, fought for us, and made possible the freedoms in life we enjoy today.
Some of us don't know how lucky we are, that the closest we may ever get to warfare,  is on computer games!☺

My father is soon to be a 99yr old WWII veteran. He is doing a "vanity publishing" of his war Memoirs for our family. Hey would never talk about it until recently.
You are so right!! thank God I never had to go to war.
I missed Vietnam by a strange twist of fate.
Truly blessed.

All my respect to him, and to you sir, for sharing. Many veteran's won't talk about it, which I can understand, or at least, imagine that I can understand! Truth is, when you do hear of some experiences, you realise what they went through is well beyond anything you can imagine! I'm glad for him, and you and your family that he can now talk about, and share his experiences. Though it may be painful, I can only think it as a good thing, ultimately!Β
And thank god for the strange twist of fate that saw you miss the hell of Vietnam!  ☺

Nigel Cresswell...

Hi John, I have taken a long time to comment on this 'cos I had to e-mail my uncle in Australia to ask him what he was happy for me to say. He said "you're a poet, say anything you want. Always"
During the Vietnam war the British government voted to stay out of the conflict. The Australian said yes. Hereford moved to Oz. A new regiment, the royal Australian S.A.S, was created to train Australian (hence my uncle) and American combat troops in sas style warfare. To this day they regard themselves as one regiment.
This poem, when I first read it had the hairs on the back of neck standing up. It was like being 18 and listening to him describe a very real incident that happened in 1970 all over again. Brilliant write.
The only criticism is that the suicide pill is a browning hi-power and captains come from Rupert school. His words there not mineΒ

Thank you so much Nigel! I feel honoured, and proud, that my poem even half reflected any memories /thoughts of real life situations. It's been a revelation, personally, and I cannot thank you enough, for sharing. I am truly grateful ☺

I was a US Marine Corps recon sniper (M.O.S. 0317) attached to the Third Marines Expeditionary Force during Operation Urgent Fury, under then Commander in Chief, President Ronald Regan in 1983, John.
The only intel we had concerning the landscape of the Island of Grenada was old tourist maps and brochures.
Still, we managed to take the Grenadian airport in less than eight hours with minimal losses to our side and rescue all of those college students that were being held hostage.
I'm very proud of that accomplishment which only served to prove what a formidable force our military truly is.
Nicely penned.

Wow! I'm truly honoured. It makes me feel very proud indeed, that people, with real experience, like yourself, react to my poem, in such a way! I can't possibly do justice the heroism of you all, just put myself in one's shoe's, imaginatively, and try to understand, and help others understand, possibly! ?
Truly appreciate the feedback Dean, cheers. ☺

You're more than welcome, John.
We who came back in one piece are not the true heroes.
The true heroes came home in a box.
Cheers, my friend,
