Soccer Game

The soccer game started around 1:00
at first it was the usual waltz,
the ball traveled,
the grass nearly caught on fire,
throughout the whole game
no one scored a single goal
the ball just flew back and forth.
The people nearly lost all hope
some packed it up
but in the last 2 minutes
one of the teams scored a goal
and won the whole game
the crowd exploded,
the same people you see
at train stops
on the highway
at the factory
exploded with joy.
The same people you saw
crying at the feet of a stranger,
vomiting outside a bar,
hiding from their past,
stood up and felt the sunshine
caressing their skin,
everyone smiled the first real smile in very long time.

I couldn't understand it,
all the misery was somehow drained
from their eye sockets,
Mothers held their child
Fathers nearly burst out in tears,
The sadness was forgotten in the air of this festival of dead spirits.
I figured that sometimes when you're so
used to losing it feels like heaven itself kissed your lips when you finally win.
These people,
with their pride,
with their years of hardships
finally won something
and I somewhat won with them
they won a soccer game,
I won a battle with despair.
