Sour Sixteens

Sixteen months ago this day, I lost my little mate;

He parted from my soul that night, right up to Heaven’s Gate!

Since then I have cried a million tears, my heart is broke in two;

For never had I loved a dog, as much as I loved you!

The first day you came into my life, was the last one I’d be sad;

You mesmerized my soul that day, with puppy love you had!

And as you grew, so did our hearts, each embrace engendered eternal love;

Every day I looked up to the sky, and thanked the Lord above!

The unknown plight of the canine curse; is a “short longevity”;

And just shy of your fourteenth year, you were taken way from me!

I went from best to wanton worst, the night you left my side;

You floated up to Heaven’s Gate, while here on Earth, I died!

Each day and night, my heart aches so, with vast amounts of pain;

It sends the blood soaked tears within, to my eyes with purple rain!

Today, it has been sixteen months, since the day we had to part;

You might have left my “universe”, but you’ll never leave my heart!
