Sulayr
Mountains Of The Sun

Burnished by sun and wind
their sculptured pose
of solar gold, water and rose,
flowing with blood sand and rain
over the purple sullen hills
and the far and dusty plain.
Wings of amber fire
that scorch the sky
upon the wind´s ruthless breath,
a silent shawl of shadows
upon a majesty of ruins,
a winged emperor
over shining minarets.
Butterfly dance and cloud shadows roam
amongst tan desert lions carved in stone,
through ochre, broken battlements
the soft silk thread of sunlight weaves
rivers of light and flowing sacred stars
through the green trees of silver pendant leaves.
Fly the worldly eye of birds
their wings of whirling dervish twirls
to cast a golden haze of snowdust pearls,
shining stones and mountain dew
awaken sun red petals of scarlet and blue.
The silver stars in hordes, Jupiter and Moon
rush the plain bearing scimitars of slate grey
cut shining jewels.
Chariot sun rolls to burnish the armored host
behind a painted veil, scarved in cloud,
the thrill of the wind´s cry through the blood red
ragged dawn´s shawl of ghosts.
Upon the frosted rime
the majesty of cloud palaces pass as time,
to vanish consumed by dust and distant fires
in burning ember eyes,
that see and scorch the plains and skies
where starry waterfall pools light the soft sunset
the old sun´s eternal gaze upon dust and death.

Beautiful👌🦋🌹 much enjoyed.
Hi Brittany, hope you are very well. Thank you for your lovely comment. The poem is about Sulayr(Mountains of the sun in Arabic) in Andalucia, southern Spain, where I live and spend much of my time. The mountain landscapes, flora and fauna are breathtakingly beautiful and are a plentiful source of inspiration for photographers, writers, adventurers and the like.
Andalucia has an Arabic influence that you see in its architecture, language,
history and culture, I tried to reflect this in the poem. The summits are well over 3000 metres and enable a view across to the Atlas Mountains in North Africa which is only a short distance away. This precious high mountain environment is always a life enhancing experience for me and is very dear to my heart, so I appreciate that you took the time to read my poem and comment. It would be fascinating to hear of your literary sources of inspiration. Thank you! xxxx
That sounds like a gorgeous source of inspiration! Have never been anywhere near those parts. It sounds fascinating.
I live in a small town in BC, Canada. I'm never far from the ocean, evergreen forests, and mountains. I am especially fond on the ocean and its wildlife as a source of inspiration:)
Not too far from here is a little island called Savary. Soooo beautiful. My favorite place to be.
Thank you for sharing your source of inspiration. Canada is a very beautiful country, although I have never been to British Columbia, I have visited Alberta on numerous occasions whilst training at Canadian Forces Base Suffield, I have fond memories of a town called Medicine Hat and also Calgary. I would like to spend time exploring The Northern Territories and also Alaska USA. I share your fondness for the ocean and am lucky to live near Spain´s Tropical Coast, so I have the best of both, the mountains and the sea. Savary Island sounds beautiful, it would be wonderful to read your thoughts about it in a poem. Thank you for being so generous in sharing your inspirations. :) xx
The imagery is lovely in this! Great choice of words x
Hi Tina, hope you are very well. Wonderful to read that you found the imagery lovely in this poem. I wrote it while tent bound in a storm last April.
I often venture into this vast wilderness with Spanish friends to climb, explore, mountain bike, Kayak, hike, do photography, write or just sit and take all the breathtaking scenery in, sometimes alone too, which is a different experience. A truly awe- inspiring beautiful place and a personal paradise. Where are your go to places? xx
