Summer Sunday

Summer Sunday

morning breaks

ticking clock

getting started

taking stock

filling trunk

setting about

loading up

heading out

all anticipate

having fun

swimming til

setting sun

shimmering water

calling me

lapping waves

slapping knees

wading deeper

diving under

cooling body

feeling wonder

piling pebbles

gliding fish

waving plantlife

healing wish

rushing up

gulping air

seeing family

waiting there

mama signals

it’s lunchtime

shaded picnic

so sublime

sitting under

live oak tree

granny’s blanket

beneath me

‘tater salad

iced-cold tea

deep-fried chicken

tummy glee

for dessert

special treat

chilled melon

very sweet

after lunch

grandpa’s fishin’

biggest catch

he’s a’wishin’

dipping bodies

into water

swimming like

people otter

playful splashing

thrashing about

turning flips

tiring out

floating in

raking rocks

soaking suit

dripping locks

grabbing towel

drying crown

rubbing lotion

lying down

feeling drowsy

voices mingling

waking up

something’s stinging

moving slowly

burning badly

packing up

leaving gladly

heading home

auto napping

bubble scrubbing

towel wrapping

eating supper

pretend playing

parents enter

mess surveying

tucking in

night-night song

knowing that

I belong

loving arms

hugging tightly

ruffling hair

smiling brightly

scary dreams

kissed away

nothing like

Summer Sunday
