Sunsets
At 8 years old, sunsets upset me
because they meant the end of the day
put away your toys
time for bedĀ
and I would cry and complain and beg
for just 5 more minutes
one more gameĀ
a story insteadĀ
At 15 I started to appreciateĀ
the hour of time before the sun went down
everything warm and golden and pretty
I wanted to be warn and golden and pretty
I liked how the light danced
and the shadows it cast
but IĀ soon realised IĀ was not like that light
and began to feel self pity
At 18 I stopped noticing sunsets
I got to school, it was dark
I left school, it was darkĀ
it started to all feel far too dark
but the sun still setĀ
even if I didn't watch itĀ
even if I didn't careĀ
it still left it's mark
Now, at 21 I have fallen in love
one again with the way the sun sets
I try to take note of it
and as the sky changes colour
I smile
I drink in the light and warmthĀ
and let it warm meĀ from the inside out
so when I see the sun setĀ
it feels like everything is okay
even if only for a short while
