Poem -

Surprise Sorrow

    Tora! Tora! Tora!

For nearly two hours, we watched.
Watched as our loved ones perished.
    No sorrow is the same.

    A surprise unforgivable.
Two and a half thousand gone.
    No sorrow is the same.

    With each passing moment,
    embers burn slowly.
Bodies tortured by relentless shrapnel and heat.
    No sorrow is the same.

    Hawaii, a paradise of many,
    broken and disheveled.
Sixty eight civilian lives.
No sorrow is the same.

We were neutral.
We took no sides
Focused on our own recovery.
No sorrow is the same.

A blood red circle upon a rectangular white sheet.
Plane by plane, dropping new fiery hell onto us.
Thrust into war after doing no wrong.
    No sorrow is the same.

Four years later, we finish revenge.
    Not the best option.
    Certainly devastating.
    Although we ended it all.
    No sorrow is the same.
