Sympathy Child

His future ahead is lonely and bleak 
  the odds do not favor those that are weak
  born to this world with a sad disposition
  suffering daily from gross malnutrition
A poor fragile body and scarred shoeless feet
  having to scavenge for something to eat
  a swollen belly and intestinal worms
  resulting from water that's filthy with germs
A hopeless face, streaked with a new tear
  searching for shelter as nightfall draws near
  orphaned young from widespread disease
  poverty and death is all that he sees
Destined a life of painful persistence
  just to maintain a feeble existence
  child, sweet child, so desperate in need
  who will come forth, who will take heed
