Poem -

That Fatal Day

The mine disaster

That dreaded nightmare has come true

Everyone wondering they are dazed

Β What can they do?

For every hour that passes by

Another wife breaks down and cries

The rescue team they start to descend

Not knowing what disaster is round the next bend

Is it a body a face all strained with fear?

The living praying that help is near

The young miner thinks of his new born child

He lets his mind wonder it starts to run wild

He tries so hard to keep himself sane and in line

While lying trapped deep in this darkened mine

Time starts ticking slowly away

Each hour that passes seems like a day

Faces become so grey and strained

His friends start crying

Β Their body’s all twisted and maimed

Knowing his wife and family are waiting above

Β They are the only people that he will ever love

He hears a noise a sudden cry

He knows he is safe

The rescue team are close by

At last that light of hope shines

I am saved from this deep darkened mine

The rescue team appear

The men start to cry they are overcome with emotion

They are crying shouting causing a commotion

We are led by our heroes from this darkened hell

As we reached the surface you could hear the church bell

You start to gasp as you take in that first breath of God’s pure air

With eyes full of tears you can only stare

Looking scanning trying hard to find

The love they thought that they had left behind

Finding your wife amid the crowd

You get that feeling it makes you feel proud

After a time you grow strong and well

You will return to this your darkened hell

You will tell your story

Of the time you were trapped

And how your heroes led you back
