The Battle of Somme

Bang! “Gas attack - run!”, the leader shouts out
Guns at the ready, stumbling up the trench
Sprinting towards no man’s land full of doubt
Everywhere around me is bloody stench.Enemy retreats, Captain’s on the floor
His haunted, frightened eyes stare at nothing
I rolled him over and saw his full gore
Shiver in my back, drop to the paving.Hospital beds full of ghostly zombies
My possessed body shakes like a monster
The disturbing laughs of other Tommies
One by one men like sheep to the slaughterHypnotised, blinded to kill for glory
This ends my meaningless shell shock story.

Not bad at all and certainly not meaningless, especially for those who lost family there.
Thanks Patricia for the feedback. I was using ‘meaningless’ as no one really won the war but loads of people died. I’m sorry, I hope I didn’t offend anyone. I wrote the poem so everyone can remember the soldiers that protected us.
No of course and you are very right in saying wars generally achieve little, except perhaps a renewed temporary appreciation of life. Have you ever heard Charlie Chaplin's speech? Have a listen on YouTube. It's amazing and he was truly ahead of his time. I look forward to reading some more of your poems.
gorgeous ink, welcome to the cosmos.
