The Christmas Five Hundred

The Christmas Five Hundred

It was Christmas Day of sixty three, Norman and I had some crazy plans;

We’d leave Dayton, Ohio at eight a.m., and be in Philly by five to kiss some hands!

We had two pretty girls waiting for us, over five hundred miles away;

We had two new Chevy’s we’d both just got, and were headed to Philly for a ten day stay!

In those days it was not all expressways, some state routes we had to take;

We were cruising real smooth at 90 mph, lots of speed limits did we break!

Maybe the Troopers were all at home that day, because we never even got stopped;

If we had and they’d have asked us “What’s the rush?”, a sob story we’d have copped!

We hit Philly promptly at 4:45, eight and three quarter hours flat;

A new world record for that distance we’d gone, we felt like two crazy cool cats!

We called the girls up, and said “We’re here, we’ll shower, eat, then be right there;

When we arrived, we found they drove faster than us, they were a very willing wild pair!

We stayed at the Marriott on City Line Ave., for ten days of parties and fun;

Than Norman headed down to North Carolina, and to Tampa, Florida, was my next run!

He was going to start his new job, as an assistant in apparel sales;

And I was headed to a large convention, to sell coins to lots of rich males!

Even though it’s now been fifty three years, since that crazy Christmas Day race;

I remember it as if it were yesterday, two nuts whose raging hormones were very fast paced!

Sounds like you both had great fun. I`m relieved that you didn`t get into trouble with the law for going that fast though. Thank you for taking us through, and letting us all share in, that lovely adventure. You sound like you were `Trouble on two legs` in those days, proper mischief makers. I was living in Malaya in 1963 as my dad was stationed out there with the army and I was only five at the time, but it was fun. Well done for this piece it was lovely to get another glimpse at your earlier years.

I love my Larry

My Dear Poetess Georgina,

In America at that time, we had a saying called "hell on wheels", and Norman and myself were perfect examples.  Glad you enjoyed it.  I can imagine how mad I would have been in the mid-eighties to find out my son had done the same thing.  You know what the old quote from a parent is, "do what I say, not what I do".  I love sharing these tales of my youth, with all of my dear ones on Cosmo.

Love to you,

Larry xxx

MY Dear Brother Poet Tony,

I need a couple of minutes for the aspirin to start working, because after reading your comment, my ego exploded.  I love reliving these adventures and sharing them with my dear Cosmo family.  It brings me great joy to absorb the passion of your words, and knowing that I have brought laughter to your heart.  Thank you so much for making my day.  I'll try to keep the cards and letters coming.

Peace, Love and Rockets,

My Brother Poet Jai,

Thank you for your lovely words.  The only thing we got booked for was several hot dates.  If you think this was terrific, you should have seen the "piece" I got in Philadelphia.

Merry Christmas,

Hi Dear Debs,

Yes, Norman was my best friend.  So sadly, I lost him to Lung Cancer at 54 years old.  I cherish these dear memories of our escapades.  I'm so glad you enjoy them too.

Love and Hugs,

Always a pleasure to read these adventures of yours....You were obviously a "stunt puller" in your youthful age.

Lots of love

Hi Sweet Rose,

I sure was Rose.  In fact, in 1968 I moved to Los Angeles and tried to get a job as a stuntman, but I was afraid of horses and heights.  Ha, Ha.  Glad you liked it.

Lots of Love,

Hi Chris,

I'm really glad you liked the poem.  All these stories I write are absolute fact, not fiction.  I seem to have a very vivid recall ability about my youth.  Happy Holidays to you too.

Peace and Love,
