The Day We Lost A Mate

It always shines up here in Townsville,
But that day was dark and grey.
We gathered with tears in our eyes,
We couldn't find the right words to say.
For it was no normal day that day,
We just found out we had lost our mate.
Some were shocked, some broke down,
But we all took on a heavy weight.
Elijah Cunneen was his name,
And he was more than just a friend.
He was someone who would storm hell with you,
And stand by you till the end.
Elijah you were such a happy person,
You were always there with a joke.
And without your laugh around at work,
We all feel lost and broke.
I'd never seen a rifleman cry,
But that day our tears coudn't stop.
When I heard the CO say your name,
I could feel my heart just drop.
The diggers had just lost a brother,
The pack of bastards lost a son.
We all stood silently united,
We all just stood as one.
We wish we saw it coming,
and maybe saw the sign.
We wish we could have helped you,
To stop you cross the line.
I wish i could tell you brother,
How truly sorry we all are.
Or what you meant to all of us,
And how our hearts all scar.
And though we say goodbye now,
Your spirit will never leave,
You brought everyone together again,
as we cry and weep and grieve.
One day we will meet again,
Perhaps at heaven's gate.
We all love you so much Cunneen,
You were more than just our mate.
Goody bye Elijah.
In our hearts always.
