The Dead Mad Poets Society
One needs to be fruitcake,
Truth be told a complete loon.
Or more madder than a hatter,
All clearly barking at the moon.
For histories mad and manic poet's,
Displayed dark derangement and notoriety.
Poets who all deserved to be certified,
Members of The Dead Mad Poets Society.
François Villon stabbed a priest to death,
Then was banished from Paris for his crime.
His poems were of such an intricate form,
Composed in notorious brothels of the time.
Richard Savage was a satirist and murderer,
Also a friend of the poet Alexander Pope.
And dabbled in blackmail and cruel gossip,
He died in a debtor's prison without hope.
Not forgetting the oversexed Lord Byron,
Poetry's romantic rock and rolling bad boy.
Who just couldn't keep it in his trousers,
Red wine from a human skull he did enjoy.
And Byron's very close friend Percy Shelley,
Would leave a trail of destruction in his wake.
A poet constantly in the need of more money,
And with women a no good two-faced snake.
Each poet both equally gifted and accursed,
Every one a mental paradox in a paradigm.
Crazy as a proverbial fox they all maybe,
But their poetry still stands the test of time.

Their poetry does indeed stand the test of time!Β Loved your research into this and then of course the flow and words you chose with a great rhyme scheme. Fabulous and I love it x
And this late reply has certainly stood the test of time and humble apologies on that front Tina.
And again as you mentioned research, that is poetry history picked up and stuck in this writer's mind.
Thanks for your unstinting support and most generous words.

Well Pratibha consider your good self now enlightened and truth be told neither did I years ago and this just a small snapshot of many incidents throughout time involvingΒ madcap, loopy poets.
Forgive this woefully late reply for I have finally escaped after many years from my padded cell.
Hope all is well with you and not forgetting family too and thank you for stopping by and your inspiring comment my friend.
And for heaven's sake please let me know when your follow-up poetry book is to be released.

This is really rather spectacular Shaun, I am most impressed, not only with the graft you must surely have put into prepping .. but the whole bloomin thing ..
Ticks all the write boxes as far as I am concerned and is an education too .. Can't think why it took me so long to get here ..
Bravo my friend .. Here's hoping that life is being kind to you .. NevilleΒ
Thanks Nev and hey you made the journey and for stopping by and being so blooming generous too.
There was so much more to write about concerning these and other poets and would have been here till the poetry cows come home, so it was cut to the chase and put this up.
For when the occasion arises less is more- sometimes.
Thanks again good sir.
And to you and your family...
All good things :)
