The Fall Guy

West Virginia was auburn again in the rain,
as I trudged thro' brown leaves down the lane;
summer had been looking for someone to blame,
by deception, with purple colors when you came.
We walked dogs, rescued animals from the wood,
and pretended life was wonderful if we could;
but you knew that thro' this incredible myriad,
it could not sustain all the things we had.
I scuffed and puffed hoping for all and best,
but should have known, should have second-guessed;
however, I walked thro' the wood with all my soul,
lifted my spirit again until it became whole.
I loved you always until there was nothing left at all,
clutched at glowing colors going down in the fall.
