The Forgotten Heroes

Slumped in an alley, behind the bins
Goon by my side, drinking away sins
I struggle to stand but collapse with a sigh
Haunted to live but afraid to die
All alone, with hearts despair
I watch the sun rise into the air
The droning sounds of vehicles fade
Until a bang from a truck pierces the day
A flash back seers my tortured mind
I hear the shots from behind
Back in the field in danger’s way
Back on the mission, killing strangers for pay
A soldier is holding his arm out straight
Finger on the trigger, determining ones fate
Eyes hold strong spying through the scope
The target strode unwary, soon to the rope
Steadying my breath I take the shot
But now revealed, others know my spot
Retreating towards, jungles cover
Enemies pursue; one after another
I hear the shots wiz past my ear
All would be lost if I listen to fear
I think of my parents and wish I were home
But life is a bastard, and politics a crone
A bullet goes deep into the flesh
Warm blood soaks through the sticky mesh
I taste the dirt as I hit the ground
Surrounded and captured, soon to be bound
Cuffed to a chair, light in my eyes
Scared and distressed, no one hears my cries
They ask me some questions and try to be nice
But I am a digger and would never eat rice
Deeper they cut and deeper they tear
But nothing oh nothing would hither despair
I try to fight their jagged knife
Promise the gods i'd make use of my life
But now I lie...
slumped in an alley, behind the bins
With goon by my side, drinking away sins
I struggle to stand but collapse with a sigh
Haunted to live but afraid to die
