The gambling man

The gambling man

old daddy was a gambling man,
and pocker was his game,
he drunk to drown his sorrows,
and he bet to hide his shame.

old momma was a nervous thing,
stripped of all her pride,
With a cigarette between her lips,
and a hip flask at her side.

I’d never be a gambling man or so I used to claim,
I’d never drink a drop I swore,
or play their cheating games.

but I grew up, lost my resolve,
so pop showed me the ropes?
To play pocker like the rest of all,
those other nasty folks.

so now I am a gambling man,
despite all I claimed to be,
and the worst of it is yet to come
because my boys’ just like me.

we’re a family of gambling men,
drowning in our sin,
because no matter what we think we do
the dice will always win.
