THE OLD MILL

This poem is based on a 1937 Silly Symphonies short animated film called "The Old Mill".Ā The attached photo is a still from the film
THE OLD MILL
Abandoned for some years now,
The old mill is now home
To mice, bats and birds of different species
There's an owl who has
Made his home in the rafters.
And a robins nest.
Frogs live in the pond outside
And cows roam nearby too
Making for a pleasant, cakm
And peaceful view.
Spiders cobwebs are here and there.
One night the storm came
With strong winds, rain,
The sound of thunder
And the sight of lighting.
The frogs disappeared
Under water,
The mother robin
Desperately protected
The eggs in her nest.
With a few tiles blown
Off the roof the owl
Was soaked and sought refuge.
The mice were left in a darkness
Interspersed with flashes
Of lighning.
The cobwebs blew.
The storm passed leaving
The old mill standing,
But more run down than before.
The eggs hatched:
Baby robins
And the animals
Went on much as before:
An undisturbed community
Making use of the mill.
