THE INDOMITABLE SPIRIT

THE INDOMITABLE SPIRIT

She had an indomitable spirit born of a
lifetime lived through the hardest of times
Every misery and heartache she had endured
she remained steadfast and not resigned
Her earliest memories were of herself at
young age begging on the streets, for she starved
A penny here a penny there any morsel of food
she acquired with her brother she halved

Her brother was always a sickly child due to
not having the nourishment of a daily meal
But she so loved him and would go without
herself just to see him smile and beam
Their parents had passed in the great depression
in the year of nineteen twenty nine
While queing for work her mother had passed away
through hunger while she stood in line

Her father had built a shack of cardboard to
live in when they were thrown out on the street
No job and no money no rent could be payed
and they scavenged for food like rats to eat
Her dad passed in a brawl as he entered
fist fights to win a paltry amounts of money
He was beaten to a pulp one day never recovered
and she witnessed his death which was so ugly

Her brother died later of rickets, bones so deformed
through lack of vitamins in thirty two
Everyone she loved had died but the life force
she felt inside her helped to get her through
Eventually she got off the streets regained her
self respect and dignity, all on her own merit
A heroine really, through  sheer determination
to survive, and her undying indomitable spirit

Hi Cherie I only had the title early this morning to
this write and the story came from i don`t know where:-)
I looked up the great depression to make sure i had the
truth of some of the times they endured , and although
it is sad i was quite pleased with how it turned out.
Thank you for your great comments  They mean a lot

Hi Dear Debs,

Wow.  What a beautiful narrative of the post depression years.  From riches to rags, the multitudes suffered.  But somehow, miraculously through her "indomitable spirit" your heroine survived adversity that few could.  I think you omitted the last verse, that she had to be Wonder Woman, possessing super human powers just to survive.  Lovely story.  Thumbs up!

Hugs, Peace and Love,

xox Larry
