The Ivy Tower

The Ivy Tower

A tower stands on the edge of a cliff,

Two trees grow between its walls,

Choked and sealed with ivy.

A chance meeting,

Two seeds carelessly dropped by a skylark,

From the same branch.

The sea crashes against the rocks beneath,

Waves pulled then released by invisible strings.

Must I live with the eternal ebb and flow of your indecision?

Your cowardice,

Your ambiguity,

Your ambivalence.

For although our souls are inexplicably entwined,

There is a vast chasm between us.

It is I however who will drown, should our roots slip.

Yet it is a connection that goes beyond the boundaries of blood ties,

Too powerful to ignore,

Too treacherous to fight for.

So here we are teetering on the edge

Locked together inside our minds,

Although our bodies are torn apart.

Unable to move forward or retreat,

In limbo,

Entombed

In ice.

Giselle, you have a very powerful poetic voice and your syntax is a beautiful thing, literary organic layered and conversational as well, reminiscent of Anne Sexton in places....your descriptions are subtle and laced with intelligence and creativity throughout, what a flawlessly written poem this is....enjoyed poet

'Must I live with the eternal ebb and flow of your indecision?'

Wow thank you for the compliment , you're too kind !  Anne Sexton , I studied her poetry amongst others at college , I admire her work and Sylvia Plath ! There are some poets that make an impression and are worth returning to for inspiration :)

Most of my poems are riddled with metaphor: if you knew the truth behind them you'd probably be shocked , so I'll leave them open to interpretation ???

lol, yes, very wise; no need to 'shock' I think it's always a good idea to have a little 'mystery' in poems, I mentioned 'Sexton' due to the 'strong voice' I heard in the write; the pleasant dancing of the words

Ha ha ha , two nude lovers on a tight rope , that's pretty much accurate !

It's not an erotic poem as such , more about a connection between two people who cannot be lovers because the circumstances are  wrong on too many levels .

So their connection has been put on ice .

As to the circumstances that make it an impossible union , the clues are in the text , and that's all I can say without giving too much away ! ???

I put the this poem into the wrong genre ! It should be under tragedy if anything .?
