The Last But Not The Least

The day that would become your last, sneaked right past my well-kept guard;

For I thought you’d live at least three more years, so I took it very hard!

For the last thing I thought I’d have to do that night, was to say to you “goodbye”;

I thought at least I’d have some time, to prepare my heart to cry!

I thought the last time I walked with you, was just the start of a week;

At least we’d go for thousands more, before your soul I’d seek!

The last time that you ate a meal, as you licked it from my hand;

The least I thought you needed rest, and not your funeral planned!

The last time that I layed you down, I never dreamt you’d not awake;

The least I thought you’d soon arise, and a nighttime walk we’d take!

The “lasts” all came and broke my heart, they stole my soulmate away;

The least the “lasts” could have done for me, was give us time to hold and pray!
