The Liberator

In memory of Daniel O Connell, Irish MP (1775-1847)

The Liberator

Liberator, emancipator
social warrior, O'Connell abu,
all sons of Oisin hail your presence
although amongst you were too few

You took to heel the penal tyrant
which stripped us of our dignity,
your loss then left us starved and exiled
for too long we were not free

You were our voice, the people's champion
a voice for the serf and slave,
for too long a people shackled
by Royal monsters across the waves

From Caherciveen to the sun of Genoa
a life well lived as heroes do,
from Erin's soil much more would follow
and haul old Sasnach to the truth

Liberator, Emancipator
social warrior, O'Connell abu,
orator for all sons of Brehon
now heaven lifts its eyes to you.
