THE LONG EMBRACE

THE LONG EMBRACE

ITS WAS A PERFECT DAY
FOR THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY
I COULD NOT SLEEP THE NIGHT BEFORE.

MOM HAD WHISPERED TO ME
THAT FOR THE FIRST TIME
MY FATHER I WOULD SEE,
HE WAS RETURNING FROM THE WAR
A SARGENT IN THE ARMY, AND I WAS NOW THREE.

O WHAT A HAPPY DAY,
AS I WAITED AND WAITED
FOR THE CLOSE OF THE DAY
TO SEE THE SKIES FIREY DISPLAY
BUT MOST OF ALL, BEHOLDING MY FATHER’S FACE.

AS THE SUN RECLINED
IN THE BOSOM OF THE WEST,
I SAT ON MY FRONT PORCH
DRESSED IN MY BEST.

BUT THE HUNDREDS OF DISPLAYS
THAT FILLED THE SKY
COULD NOT BRIGHTEN THE GLOOM I FELT INSIDE,
AS IT WOULD TAKE FIVE MORE YEARS
FOR ME TO LOOK INTO MY FATHER’S EYES.

WILFORD BARKER.

Hello Wilford...

I remember when I was 2 years old...

I knew my Mom, my Brothers, Grandma, and other relatives...

I didn't know I had a man that I was supposed to call Dad...

A stranger came into my house and he he was in his Military suit...

It was really late that night but, their voices had woken us kids up...

My Mother was hugging the stranger and my Brothers called him Dad...

Someone picked me up I think it was my oldest Brother tried putting me in the stranger's arms...

I was so scared...

I demanded to be put down...

I screamed and never knew I could even be that loud...

I started crying...

The stranger said put her down...

I ran to my room shut the door and I remember hearing the stranger's footsteps coming up the stairs...

I was too afraid to turn my light on...

I thought about hiding in my closet but, I figured that would be the first place he'd look...

I hid under my bed instead...

It took a long time before the stranger and I talked...

Then I would swear that I was his favorite...

That's what I told my Brothers anyway...

The stories with my Dad began with our first hug...

I was turning 4...

Great write!

Thank you for sharing...

I don't know about that request...

That's something I'm really going to have to think about...

I'm sure you understand...
