"THE PRICE OF COAL"

"THE PRICE OF COAL"

It was a dreary day as all the little children
got ready for school in a little Welsh Valley
"Bye mam see you later" and off they go
to begin their lessons and study

It was the last day of term and all were looking
forward to the October autumn break
but a tragedy unforeseen was due to happen
which would devastate, and hearts would ache

9-15 the children sat in their classrooms in Pantglas Junior`s
when a deafening rumbling was heard
But silent were they, frozen in time
no sound from a child or even a bird

High above the school a mountain used for tipping
coal debris began to slide, through heavy rain
in a matter of minutes classrooms were engulfed with
150,000 cubic meters of liquid coal, no one could restrain

116 children and 28 adults died on this day through
a negligent act of tipping, this waste of black gold
A whole generation of little children were lost
and their families suffered, loss with  pain untold

Aberfan October 21st 1966 we will never forget
the pain and suffering of loss these families still feel
A tragedy of which brought many broken hearts
and lost hopes and dreams, of little children so unreal

In Memory of the children and adults who lost their lives this day

Oh My Goodness DEBS!!..... this is such a powerful write...... like Cherie, I knew nothing of this part of historical tragedy....... you've conveyed this great sadness and loss of life extremely well here...... for a poet to take on this subject matter is a victory in itself....... to immortalize this event in words is a most generous and honorable thing to do......a write to be praised for its generosity of spirit in keeping this part of history alive...... and immortalizing it ~ by passing it on to those fortunate enough to find this write on their path in life......a beautiful piece my friend!!......ALL STARS ~ PINNED........LOVE and ROCKETS!!.......T xo

Hello Sis Debs...

I remember hearing about this...

Though I was born a year later by the time I got to school it was still such a recent tragedy...

Great tribute to those that were taken by this event...

Thank you for sharing...

Hugs...

Hi Dear Debs,

Oh, wow!  I'm sure somewhere in the dark recesses of my brain, this horrible tragedy is recorded, but I had forgotten about it.  Thank you so much for this beautiful tribute to these poor souls who lost their lives that day.  Linda and I are going to reread about this tragedy.  Thank you for this lovely remembrance of one hundred fifty four fallen angels.

Hugs, Peace and Love,

xox Larry

Hi Debs. I remember this tradgedy and the pain of it and the terrible lessons to be learned from it as these mountains of coal debris were to be found throughout the valleys. Sad but great tribute to those families and the strength the mining communities. Best wishes.byd0nz

Hi BydOnz Yes there were many pits in the  Welsh Valleys ,there are
none now. The coal industry was the main source of work for many
years in Wales and elsewhere around the Uk. Sadly many lives were lost
through money not spent on safety measures My own grandfather broke his back in
a coal fall, and he was nt able to work again
Aberfan was so tragic who would deposit waste from mines on the the side
of a mountain up above school it begger`s belief where was their sense.
Thank you for your kind comments very appreciated BydOnz
Best wishes Debs

I will never forget that tragedy my Debs, I was 8 at the time and we had just come back to England from Malaya as my dad was in the army for 30 years. I didn`t know what death meant till we saw that on the news and in the papers and I remember both my parents crying in shock which shocked me so much as I had never seen them cry and it was devastating to realize what it all meant. Well done sweetie for this beautiful tribute piece and you have done Wales proud with it.

God bless

Love G xx

REMEMBER

We will remember you by candle light

We will see your shadow on the moon

We will remember you when a distant voice sings a lovely haunting tune

We will remember you in sunshine

We will feel your tears within the rain

We will recall those special moments that we will never have again

We will look for you in memories

As the years they come and go

We will see your face in waters cool

We will see your footprints in the snow

An angels smile

A nightingales song

Golden sunsets and the restless sea

In all that we do and love our dear children

We will all love and remember thee

Love and prayers to all the parents and children of Aberfan

God bless them all

G xx
