The rules of the game

The rules of the game

The devils grins and the angel wags her finger, there’s no confusing what is happening here.

Can any good come from this I wonder, any sense in the guilt edged knife that fuels my fear?

Trying to deny the fire that burns, reaching for my hand, grasping it greedily I sigh…

My expectations for this encounter I fear are unrealistic and to my foolishness, much too high.

Desperately searching for something to fill this space, this emptiness that consumes my spirit whole,

Yet in its wake, I am left disillusioned and lost as my insecurities rage and torment my soul.

The light that once shone through my being, the energy that surged within, a million miles away,

Now a mass of darkened shadows that smother my solace, my hope every breath of each waking day.

The devil laughed and the angel cried, there’s no great shock to the ending of this once hopeful affair,

I let my heart rule what I knew in my head wasn’t true, and I laid myself open, empty and bare.

A fantasy, a childish dream, once again the victim of a romantic notion I fooled myself to see,

All but a solid reminder of the world I live in, the apparition of the people I presuppose of them to be.

The devil smirks, his work is done and the angel, she gazes pitifully to my begotten shame.

I wanted so much to hold the winning hand but I never once thought to study the rules of the game.
