The Space Storm

The Space Storm

Drifting in outer space, we were very low on fuel,
We had to conserve it religiously, running out would be uncool,
We had made it quite a distance, the Space Station was not that far,
It was the result of a meteor storm, that provided all of our drama.

We had just cleared Earth's atmosphere, and set a course for here,
We picked up something suspicious, on the scanner it did appear,
A pretty big rock smashed into the moon, and spat out it's debris,
Various sized rocks were inbound, as far as the eye could see.

Our technology isn't Star Trek, we had no sheilds at all,
We put on all our space suits, we the Captain made the call,
These rocks were fast moving, they might just smash straight through,
So if there is a hull breach in the ship, that's what we needed to do.

First of all it was pitter patter, as the small ones hit the hull,
The noise was almost deafening, it certainly wasn't dull,
Then the bigger one's started to hit, which knocked us off our course,
Then they started darting through, piercing through with no remorse.

The Captain was in the cockpit, wrestling with the altering ship,
Blood spurting in zero atmosphere, as a rock went through his hip,
It was almost poetic, as we watched his blood as it floated around,
Then slipped out the rocks exit hole, eerily without making a sound.

Travis unbuckled then floated over, he took over his medic bag,
He looked at the Captain's bloody hip, he knew it looked really bad,
He went to apply some pressure, another rock removed the Captain's head,
And also passed through Travis, the Captain and Travis now dead.

The blood siphoned out the exit holes, until the Captain's head blocked one,
All I can see is the Captain's head looking at me, the sight was just not fun,
I unbuckled myself and floated forward, across to the Captain's chair,
And removed the Captain's torso, so that I could sit in there.

The storm of rocks subsided, return to Earth I couldn't do,
For the ship was like swiss cheese with holes, my options were quite few,
There was me and two others left in suits, and a fuel leak I had found,
So it was time to head on to Mars, we were now Space Station bound.

The other two survivors left me flying, and floated throughout the ship,
To check the ship for any more damage, the ship was banged up quite a bit,
They got rid of the bodies, zipped them up in body bags,
And put them in the Medic Bay, and wrote their names on the tags.

So that's what happened earlier, the Space Station is now in view,
We had to thrust and drift to get here, it's all that I could do,
We plugged the holes as best we could, I didn't want to push it though,
I didn't know the ship's integrity, so I didn't want it to blow.

Lining up the final stretch now, I can see the docking zone,
Looking back at all the days events, I think I should of stayed home,
But nothing ventured, nothing gained, we survived it in a way,
With sadness I can tell my friends, I was a Captain for a day.
