The Tale of a Heart that wouldn't Heal

Once someone put a hole on my heart,
I patched with cotton wool, but it didn’t last
It was too soft, the tears ran right through it
Once someone put a hole on my heart,
I patched with wood, but the fire burned fiercely
In the depth of its core and the patch became ashes
Once someone put a hole on my heart,
I patched with stone, and it was all right for a while,
the heart got tired of missing out the melodies, one day grew cold
Once someone put a hole on my heart,
I patched with vengeance,
and it got dissolved with the bitter taste of the acid
Once someone put a hole on my heart,
this time I patched with forgiveness
but the hole didn’t close because the wound wouldn’t heal
Once someone put a hole on my heart,
I finally healed it with understanding and self-love.
In my old age my heart still beats strong.

Hello Bernadete...
Great message...
Thank you for sharing...
lovely bird
Now who's the cleva one eh' .. Neville
I definitely have a predilection for liking poems that have a repeated refrain. Just like yours does. It makes it almost more like song lyrics. Or is that just me? I like what you choose to patch that hole on your heart with. I have to admit that when you got down to forgiveness the patch might have worked. Interesting that the wound wouldn't heal. Interesting but also, given poetry I have written, entirely understandable.
I do however like your final choice particularly self love. Understanding is interesting as well. As to how this poem speaks to me I would say understanding is as far as I can go for what happened. Forgiveness may just be a step too far. Sorry to have gone on - as is my way.
A bittersweet journey B because life is exactly that. Elegant and beautifully written as always my friend x
Well written great message!
Great write, Bernadete.
