The Vulture in Wait

Wandering through a desert,
I lost my footing over a dune,
And rolled down the sandy hill.
I awoke to a vulture pecking at my chest to eat my heart.
Why was it trying to take my heart away?
Ā
Though I am far from the desert now,
I can not trust my eyes to sleep,
Lest I awake to a vulture trying to take my heart away.
Ā
I go about my day,
Circled by this vulture.
With every beat in my chest, there is a peck
That seeks to take my heart away.
Ā
Wherever I may go,
Foul feathers lie in wait.
Peck, peck, peck, went the vulture's beak; however, it did not feast and know my taste.
So come what may, let me be brave.
Though you will seek, you will not take my heart away.
