THE YEAR 2020

THE YEAR 2020

It's come to that time again when we await the latest reviews of the year.
Hard not to think it it would be almost impossible seeing them bringing much cheer.
My guess is most people would consider it a year to willingly forget
and yet it is one that, in its own strange way, has given us a rich palette.
We've all, at some time, had to put up with lengthy spells spent in isolation.
For me, a writer, this has tended to help free up my imagination.
Thursday mornings were a bonus, there to go some way towards lifting the gloom.
Where would we all have been without the technological wizardry of Zoom?

Let's not dwell on the politicians who can only deal in lies and deceit.
Instead Let's remember why people felt the need to be present on the street
and John Lewis, to a new generation, would not be a department store.
Instead his name would be one of those held aloft along with so many more.

Lockdown gave me the opportunity to regress and let my hair grow long,
commit to a daily diary retelling aspects of my life in song
as I journeyed with my memory back to the sweet sounds of Laurel Canyon
with its strong aromas of cannabis, rain soaked eucalyptus and jasmine.

But, however much some might want it to be so, surely it won't be easy
to forget this strangest of years, this unusual year, this 2020.
The image which was etched on my hippocampus, one that is interracial,
that of Patrick Hutchinson, the embodiment of a modern day angel.

Ah, there is utter beauty in here, but it's here because instead of laying down and giving up a poet found his light and used such a moment of deep darkness which was truly a blind moment for all, as none of us had ever lived in such a time. Yes you have a beautiful heart and soul dear Bernie, compassion and empathy not everyone holds those tools but with such times we have something to show as you do here, I loved every line. The smells of eucalyptus and jasmine and the fact that all our hairs were missing such a simple thing as a skilled pair of scissors. There was much loss yet some very positive gains from this moment which ripped into the gut of the entire world. 🌹

I am honoured that you think that of me Shirley. Know that it is a mutual feeling. Thank you doesn't seem enough but it will have to do. Well I have kept my long hair though it does see scissors every now and then. Or maybe, just maybe, I'm still in Laurel Canyon.
Merci beaucoup ma chere amie. 🌹
Sorry about the missing grave accent.

I agree very much with Shirley Bernie and it's wonderful to read your account of why 2020 was special to you. It was a very strange year indeed, for some a chance to slow down and recuperate and for others a nightmare. Great write x

Thank you so much Marion. And for those for whom it was a nightmare it's one from which they haven't yet recovered and maybe never will. For others a chance to make money. x
