The Young Man

The Young Man

Look at he picture, he was so young then,
I climbed in and strangely stood next to him,
there we were, all those long years ago,
practising his golf swing, with the sea below.

Then there was the car race, side by side,
foot on the accelerator, no place to hide,
gas pumping, body jumping, adrenalin read,
then the other guy just left us for dead.

It didn't matter, he put the snake round my shoulders,
in the temple, turned white and had a fright,
I smiled and he seemed to reduce in height,
we went outside, laughing in the afternoon light.

He said: 'You're not going back now, stay with me,'
but I had to return to the place I was supposed to be.
