this could be you

This could be you
He just sits there with a stare in his eyes
Looking at nothing as people pass him by
Does no one see him?
Is he invisible to the naked eye?
Do you only notice when a tear appears
Alternatively, a quiet whimper as he starts to cry
Ask him who he is and from whence he came
Does anyone take time to ask him his name?
Do you think he has a soul within?
As he looks at you
When he holds up his rusty old tin
He might have been a doctor or lawyer who cared
What drove this man to be helpless dirty and scared
It might be you some day it might even be me
He lays out his life for all to see
His eyes blank with his steady stare
You can walk by he doesn’t have a care
Tomorrow when you pass by again
He will be here dirty smelly and looking the same
He will have that same blank look in his eye
Nevertheless, no one will care or ever ask him why
