Thought i knew better

Its Christmas eve and you’re out with the lads
Laughing and joking just acting the goat
One more pint, then on with your coat

Leave the pub, swing keys round your finger
Without a thought for the person behind the ring on that finger
That last pint, yeah it still lingers.

Alcohol fused, you’re off in a hurry
Out of the door, telling mates not to worry
Brain not thinking straight you open the gate
Down the path you stagger to your coffin that awaits

Fumbling hands trying to find the keyhole
Eyes squinting, seeing double vision, you open the door
Sit in your seat, drop keys on the floor
Cursing you fumble around on the floor
Pick them up, then close your door

Adjust your mirror; you look at your reflection
knowing your perception needs some correction
Thinking “god I look rough” as you stare at pale complexion
But still you put keys into the ignition
Rev the engine  with great conviction

Check your mirror, into first gear
Indicate, and then pull out
Watch that boy you hear them shout
Mind not straight because you’re pissed
boy on bike is narrowly missed

Swerve to miss boy on his bike
Into oncoming traffic, towards bright lights
Then it comes with one almighty clash
Eyes close as your head hits the dash

Blood that  drips from steering wheel
outside your window, people squeal
as your head hangs lifeless on the wheel
your mind thinking is this for real

lying still, not able to move
legs pinned tight, imprisoned by your seat
indicators stuck on constant repeat
bright blue lights try to accomplish their feats

Life that slips before your eyes
Thoughts of memories past slip by
As you struggle for your last breath
Infused blood coagulates in your head
Causing almost instant death

Christmas day in your household
Filled with bitter, sorrow, remorse
Your wife cries from the news, and slumps to the floor
rubbing her belly Saying “you stupid man
Why didn’t you take the bus?
And then you still be here with us,
you silly man."

Looking down from heaven above
Missing all you had and once loved
Thinking what a big mistake you made
Thinking “why oh why did I have that last pint?
Why didn’t I listen to my friends at the gate?”
what did it matter if i was a few minutes late?

I should have took a cab, I know this now
But it’s too late; I’m in a hole in the ground
All because I thought I knew better
Now all my wife has is this letter
A letter to say my worldly goods are yours
Look after them love, and please don’t mourn
Get on with your life, you deserve better than me
If i hadn't had that last drink
we'd now be three
we'd now be a family.

Hello Jeff...

The fatal tragedy of drinking and driving...

Many people unfortunately can relate to this in one way or another...

A great reminder with the holidays just around the corner...

Great write!

Thank you for sharing...

Hugs...
