Thought i knew better

Its Christmas eve and you’re out with the ladsÂ
Laughing and joking just acting the goatÂ
One more pint, then on with your coatÂ
Leave the pub, swing keys round your finger
Without a thought for the person behind the ring on that finger
That last pint, yeah it still lingers.Â
Alcohol fused, you’re off in a hurryÂ
Out of the door, telling mates not to worryÂ
Brain not thinking straight you open the gateÂ
Down the path you stagger to your coffin that awaitsÂ
Fumbling hands trying to find the keyholeÂ
Eyes squinting, seeing double vision, you open the doorÂ
Sit in your seat, drop keys on the floorÂ
Cursing you fumble around on the floorÂ
Pick them up, then close your doorÂ
Adjust your mirror; you look at your reflectionÂ
knowing your perception needs some correctionÂ
Thinking “god I look rough” as you stare at pale complexion
But still you put keys into the ignition
Rev the engine with great conviction Â
Check your mirror, into first gearÂ
Indicate, and then pull outÂ
Watch that boy you hear them shoutÂ
Mind not straight because you’re pissedÂ
boy on bike is narrowly missed
Swerve to miss boy on his bikeÂ
Into oncoming traffic, towards bright lightsÂ
Then it comes with one almighty clash
Eyes close as your head hits the dash Â
Blood that drips from steering wheelÂ
outside your window, people squealÂ
as your head hangs lifeless on the wheelÂ
your mind thinking is this for real
lying still, not able to moveÂ
legs pinned tight, imprisoned by your seat
indicators stuck on constant repeatÂ
bright blue lights try to accomplish their feats
Life that slips before your eyesÂ
Thoughts of memories past slip byÂ
As you struggle for your last breath
Infused blood coagulates in your headÂ
Causing almost instant death
Christmas day in your householdÂ
Filled with bitter, sorrow, remorseÂ
Your wife cries from the news, and slumps to the floor Â
rubbing her belly Saying “you stupid manÂ
Why didn’t you take the bus?
And then you still be here with us,Â
you silly man."
Looking down from heaven aboveÂ
Missing all you had and once lovedÂ
Thinking what a big mistake you made
Thinking “why oh why did I have that last pint?Â
Why didn’t I listen to my friends at the gate?”
what did it matter if i was a few minutes late?Â
I should have took a cab, I know this nowÂ
But it’s too late; I’m in a hole in the groundÂ
All because I thought I knew better
Now all my wife has is this letterÂ
A letter to say my worldly goods are yoursÂ
Look after them love, and please don’t mournÂ
Get on with your life, you deserve better than meÂ
If i hadn't had that last drinkÂ
we'd now be threeÂ
we'd now be a family. Â
