Poem -
Three Poppies
Here,
where they once
stood,
in hundreds
of thousands ..
Each
seemingly solid,
firmly
rooted and erect ..
Still proud
and mostly
smiling or waving ..
Today,
I found only three
and each one
of them holding
their heads
bent and bowed low ..

On November 11th each year, I always stop what I am doing as a mark of respect to all those who made the greatest of sacrifices during the so called great War of 1914 - 1918 ..
Until very recently, I also made annual pilgrimages to France & Belgium and visit some of the Commonwealth war graves .. One of the most moving experiences of my life to date is the assembly at 20.00 hrs each evening at The Menin Gate at Ypres which ranks just as moving as when I delivered my own son into the world ..Â
I like the fact that you reminded me that it is not just us Brits that commemorate such monumental events & in that respect, I have a lot of respect for my Antipodean brothers and sisters down in Oz & NZ ..
