The Tuesday Night Lights

A Tuesday night in autumn;

seventh grade boys await kick-off.

Their excitement grows with the
anticipation of another game.

They can’t sit still.

They pace with nervous energy.

They ask you all the same
questions – “What time is kick-off?

When am I going to play?” You
grit your teeth and stay patient.

I coach in a league where wins
or nice, but they aren’t a priority.

It’s all about fundamentals and

teaching life lessons.

When game time arrives, the boys
compete.

Some make plays and some don’t.

Some may have big time football in their
future.

The rest of them won’t - this
will be their football experience.

Some boys will go on and shine
of Friday nights.

They will become football stars.

But most will enjoy this
autumn and the Tuesday night lights.
