Under the Apple Tree

Under the Apple Tree

I don't want to be here
Looking back over my shoulder
Raking over the embers of a long dead life ...
Standing under this apple tree
But you force my head
Swing it round till it cracks
Demanding attention as you ever did
Well I'm not looking, I'm not turning
I've a future, one I'm proud of
You are unyielding steel strength
Stood guard over our fruits
Don't try to bite these apples
I've poisoned them good
Bitter to the last
You can't see it
I never wanted to bite the apples
I wanted to nurture their seeds
So they would become strong trees
Bear fruit of their own
But you've stunted the roots, the fruits gone bad
And I honestly don't know if these apples can be saved
But I will die trying
Hold a basket under the branches
Ready to catch them if they fall
