WE'RE ALL CONFORMIST NOW (THE ROAD TO HELL...)

Now we're all conformists
Living in a kind of police state.
We usually do not trust politicians.
Suddenly we assume they've got it right:
Collective hysteria demands action.
"Stay at home. Stay at home"
They say. We echo.
Not content with soap
And social distancing.
Closing shops cafes and businesses
Will wreck the economy
Which supports us.
But we conform.
And most don't even think to question.
Who and what funds the NHS?
(The unintended consequences of our actions).
The healthy old are now cooped
Up inside. Needing exercise.
Now unable to really exercise.
Becoming weaker.
Businesses going bust.
We'll pay higher taxes.
But we're all conformists now.
Cancelled operations
(Hip, heart and lung).
People will die therefore.
But we don't question "experts"
Have they got it wrong?
Are politicians implementing
The wrong strategy?
We ignore the words of Lord Sumption.
We do not question.
"Stay at home. Stay at home"
They parrot.
But is this really effective?
In this Coronavirus pandemic
We should keep things in perspective.
With businesses going bust
We see livelihoods and jobs destroyed.
"It's only money" some may think.
And the governments will keep them buoyed.
But in the long term if they're not working
They won't be able to pay taxes- and so
We'll cancel out the short term good
Of a lockdown.
With a poorer NHS, and with poorer
And less healthy food.
How far can furlough go?
The older generation seem to wish
To keep calm and carry on
(They've lived through wars and more)
But the younger people
With their social media
Seem to only think as one
And are happy to do as they're told.
And so we have a blind assumption
That governments responsible for budget cuts,
Financial crashes and more
Have the solution to Covid 19.
And we don't question anymore.
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Ps. In your title ~ Shouldn't that be ROAD? Not RIAD?....: )
Hi Tony,
Thanks for your feedback- and yes you're right- I meant to write "ROAD" rather than "RIAD". I've corrrected it now.
I wrote it after doing a bit of research on Coronavirus, including listening to the YouTube video featuring Lord Sumption- whose photograph I have included here.
Take care.

Reading the poem put a smile on my face. I liked how you added dialogue and short scenes throughout the poem. I know little about politics but what I read from your poem is that we are having trouble as a society putting our faith into a system that seems to be divided and are cross with one another. How could this same system of people, be who will save all of us in the end. I really liked how you set up the poem, it was easy to read, to understand and to enjoy. Thank you for sharing your poem.

I agree, I am worried too many people will get out thinking the worst is over. I think we all need to brace for the worst and be prepared for the worst, just in case. I think so far the USA Government has done a fantastic job. I'm impressed with how they are making changes so quickly. We always want more done and it a lot quicker. We're all learning how to be survivors in our own ways.
Lovely work as usual young man
