When My Lights Faded

When My Lights Faded

Once in a distant faraway time
I was a princess.
So pure and beautiful.
All over my body
I had millions of tiny lights.
Just like the Christmas tree has
all bright and silver shining.
Always flickering in the dark
they lit my way
to only good places.

Then one by one
they started to fade.
It happened when
I got to be older
and the truth
became not black and white.
But thousands of hues
of grey I had learned how to lie.

First small lies
No mom there’s no alcohol at the party.
A few of my pretty lights would fade.

Then darker greys
No dad there’s no drugs in my group
a whole branch would go out.

Then No mom I did not sleep with him.
Soon all my lovely lights faded away.
I was no longerĀ a Ā beautiful princess.

Now I walk the rain soaked
sidewalks of the city streets.
At night I see my reflection
in the store windows.

I look lost tired and jaded.
All my lights have faded to black.
Except for just a few
they are around my heart.
