Where Love Goes to Die
She placed her hand out to plea for any sign of comfort,
knowing there was little left to do.
He had long departed from their marriage
and yet she held onto one last hope that he'd miss her,
or he'd fight for her, maybe then she'd pause.
If only he could show one tiny pang of regretÂ
for all the pain that he had caused?
But her hope was shattered in that final moment.
He offered no resistance;
showed her no remorse.
He never paused;
as he helped her into her car.
Perhaps, she could even see the relief in his eyes:
to have let go of the one he continued to disappoint.
For it is said that a man is better to live in the wilderness, alone
than to live with resentment and judgement in his own home.
This is what it had come down to.Â
His betrayal, her neglect;
no love left, certainly no respect.
It's a final judgement and sentence neither could undo;
True, she was the constant reminder of the man he could never be.
He had surrendered, knowing he was never going to be set free.
He had tried, and failed, his soul lost, he'd become undone.
The moment she passed from his view and would return no more,
he'd escape back to that secret hell behind that closed door;
back to the chains that held him captive to that small little screen;
living a life of lies and fantasies in an endless on-line stream.
In the virtual world where anything goes,
Secrets, and lies, no reality, and no one ever knows.
No love, no loss, no judgement;Â
where silent empty isolation drowns in mournful screams.
and where broken lives and souls and hearts finally go to die.
