Who'd have guessed

Who'd have guessed

I learned about the plague at school and the thousands that it killed
As a class we considered the year 2000 and the progress it would bring
Space travel, new technology, new gadgets, electric cars
No one dreamt in a million years pandemic would be the main thing

I watched the news in January believing the virus in China wouldn't spread
By March we were all in lockdown, bit of a novelty it was at the start
Almost a year later, a third lockdown we have to endure
Another death is much more than a number, it really breaks your heart

I've not been out for months now, I'm accustomed to my cell
Zoom I'd never heard of has become a way of life
Stay safe in these unprecedented times, words that were never used
Take care to stay in your bubble protect your husband or your wife

I dress up to put the bin out as it's the biggest event of the week
Clothes I'd once have worn to work can't let them go to waste
Each day is the same as the last one all merging into one
An invisible killer is amongst us and it is spreading with such haste

The little things I took for granted, I now long for everyday
A stroll to the shops for non essentials, a catch up with a friend
I'd never have guessed back in January what life had in store for us all
It seems to be lasting forever, now all I want to see is the end
